Old melodies

Listening non-stop to old melodies
dredged up from clogged memories of childhood,
frayed satin ribbons, pressed flowers in scrapbooks,
caught in folds of pages, in an obscure crease

of time and place. Reminiscent of things
I hardly think about now, the drizzle
of sunlight through leaves, long-tailed kites, and whistles,
wide open skies, gentle lands, and landings.

Halfway across the world, streets, towns convulse -
someone, something has fallen, crashed again,
the earth is slack jawed, crushed to smithereens
a lone armed man gloats at a feeble pulse.

Can't find a tune to match, something titled -
‘never yours, with aversion’?  Unbridled.

  1. Never yours, with aversion would have a very, very strong beat - and those who could sing the chorus would be legion...

    1. Yeah, that's how I thought it should be too - strong beat, firm voice rising steady to a crescendo drowning out the hatred

    1. There should be, I think outrage should have its own poem/tune

  3. indeed, not worthy of a tune. But this poem is worthy of much thought. I started off in a song memory mode and then went whoa! and turned off the music in my head

    1. Why does poetry/music celebrate love, but stop short of condemning hatred and violence?

  4. I agree with Joanne. The transition in this poem is haunting.

    1. Thank you, that's what the sonnet must do if it's to be worthy of its name...

  5. The earth is slack-jawed indeed. But if Anne Frank, squeezed into her attic hiding place, could still believe that people are good at heart, then who are we to lose that faith?

    1. Absolutely. Most people are, but one bad apple...and our response must be robust - in considered action, in words, in song/art. Use every means to get the message across...

  6. I csn't help but feel, the speaker was searching outside for what was within

  9. Just when I think the world can't get crazier it does. Love the poem. As usual you've penned the moment!
