Nightfall

The sky turns its face towards me
and raises a brow in a question mark
will you know me wherever I am
and wherever you are? Without
the fingerprints of a single star?
I don’t know, I whisper. But I am
being diplomatic. The sky’s the same
everywhere. I don’t wish to hurt
any feelings. Probably meet again
unexpectedly in another city
somewhere. The smoke of evenings coils
around me upwards, the factory
whistles its workers slowly home.
Nearby a stripped tree wears nesting
sparrows like sparse winter foliage.
The shoeshine man sits at the crossroads
of darkness and cobbles the soles
of scuffed daydreams.

  1. Even with stars it looks the same.
    Don't tell it though.

  7. The stuff "under" the sky seems relatively the same, too! The cliche "There's nothing new under the sun" could probably be re-phrased as "There's nothing new under the sky," too.

  8. Nicely written. I usually don't pay attention to nightfall of late since I'm usually inside at the time. I enjoy my times in Tennessee sitting on a porch as evening envelopes a group of us engaging in conversation. I have great memories of nightfall over the years of my life.

  9. I was in Norway once and they told me that the moon is different there than in the US. That it was like a bowl filling up when it was a half moon or either emptying. Unfortunately ,that was a lifetime ago and I don't remember. Now I have to wait until the leaves come off of the trees in my yard to even see the moon and try to remember.
