The Interview

The woman’s unsmiling, no shades, and someone
has insisted on subtle make-up, nude
lipstick, discreet eyes, keep it underdone;
the events anyway far from this horizon.
Too much emotion equals ineptitude.

The questions are brisk, a probe into sepsis,
but her answers betray little feeling.
Only her mouth purses and unpurses,
forms the words with obvious difficulties,
“no, he was never into that sort of thing.”

Huge failure that a youth couldn’t be rescued
from what he thought he rightly did
epic fail but government or parenthood?
and blame rarely drapes the way it should.
She only says, “he wasn’t that kind of kid.”

  2. Hmmmm yes whom to blame the government or the parents, but we really need to ponder as to where we are heading and our country too.

    1. Absolutely. Those two are the easiest answers, aren't they?

  3. The example we set to the young are those they will emulate and even when we tell them it's wrong when they see us do it, they don't see the error in it. Well written, dear.

    1. Agree. Do as I say not as I do doesn't work with the young nor does it deceive the old. Thanks for being here.

  4. Isn't that often the way--my kid couldn't do that! Makes you wonder how well we know our kids and how far parental responsibilities go, doesn't it? So well expressed as always, Nila.

    1. Some residual sense of responsibility remains even when the nest is empty, misplaced or not :~)
