Readings

Everything draws to a close, all things –
words, wine, meetings with friends, evenings
pleated through with cursive laughter,
the delight of the deepest yearnings.
The flame that will choose to burn softer
before it drops down with the mothwings.
The breeze that feathers nights, after
the slow spiral of the hot mornings.
One by one the lines and the chapters
till the last, till there remains nothing.

  1. Melancholy, beautiful, and true.
Except that while I am still here, before I too turn to nothing, I have and hug to myself memories of things and people who have gone.

    1. Those are two things no-one can afford to run out of. :) Happy replacements!

  5. Beautiful and kind of sad. Even though it's a fact that all things come to a close, it always leaves an empty feeling - whether or not the experience was joyful.

  6. Even happy endings are sad. So beautifully written. I know when I want to know how a book ends... but I don't want it to end. But on the bright side. Endings mean new beginnings... so that's good right?

  8. What a beautiful elegy. On Saturday I had lunch with two women who have been my friends for 40 years. When we left, we all made a bittersweet pledge to remain friends for the next 40, knowing full well that some or all of us will no longer be here by then. But we will savor what we have.

    1. That's the main thing isn't it? To savour what we have - all the sad and the happy and the bittersweet.. It's just fantastic that you can lunch with friends you've known for 40 years, so very blessed! Wish you more of such lunches!

    2. Thank you so much, Nila. Yes, I feel very lucky indeed. And I also feel very lucky to have met you, even if it's only online!

    3. Me too ditto absolutely! Thank you for your friendship!

This past week a friend came to visit, we had last met in Egypt some five years ago, and our time together has been more online than off-. :) The net is an amazing tool! and we are one lucky generation in that our friendships need not come to a close because of physical distances any more.

  12. It's hard to close a book, especially if I've grown to love the characters. But you said it beautifully everything must come to an end, or does it. I like the circle, it has no end, do we?
Hi, Nila, I'm enjoying my break from all things computer, and yet there is no way to really sign off and stay off. :)

    1. Hi Yolanda! Hope you are logging on from remote Alaska-esque locations and getting lots of R & R! :) Closing books, chapters - it is what we make of it, isn't it? Every ending even if it is a HEA has a kernel of sadness, and every ending has a beginning nested into it...seamlessly, cyclically.

  13. The end of the book can be a sad thing sometimes but I'm always happy when I've read a great book. Thanks for sharing your poetry.

    1. Thanks for visiting. Great books can make me feel sad when they end, happily I can start rereading almost immediately, or pick up another...

  14. Life is fleeting
    each moment a life time
    yet none last
    clanging to each
    as they slip away
    until only others
    remember us
    till they too
    are forgotten

    As always a great job.
