Forgotten cooled

Sometimes I forget to drink while it’s hot,
and later when I peer into the cup
it’s gone halfway down and a skin has formed,
marred the creaminess and puckered it up.

I could pinch it between finger and thumb
and remove it gently, reheat and restart
and finish it to the dregs as usual
but drinking halfway cup’s also an art -

not everyone can remove those skins
to lift them seamless requires expertise
and put that exact heat back in the drink -
preference is a matter of degrees.

So I pour it off, let the half go waste
the temperature makes or mars the taste.

Does it happen to you sometimes too? :)  The cup, the glass, the cafe, tavern, inn etc, someplace with lots of comings and goings is a staple of Eastern metaphors. Comfort food. Or rather, drink. I have a craving for it right now :)

  1. While at work I became an adept at drinking cooled hot beverages. And still sometimes forget.
No skin on mine though. Which is fortunate because I suspect I wouldn't drink it.

    1. Skins on milky drinks are the ultimate of irritants (and uber gross! :), I can't bring myself to drink those either.

  2. I get distracted by people and/or conversation and often put my coffee or tea secondary. (great sonnet)

  3. Hi Nila - I tend not to drink during the day - well water yes ... but I grin and bear things if that's the way it is ... and if I really don't want it - it gets left. Though I know people can gross up at times!

Not many of us could write about forgotten-cooled - well done! Now I'm going to drink a hot cup of coffee ... cheers Hilary

    1. Well done Hilary on sticking to water - wish I could too! :) May your morning cup always come to you hot and never get skins. Have a great weekend with the coffee.

  5. Interesting topic for a poem. ☺ That takes talent! My coffee often cools, but there's not enough milk in it to form a skin, thank goodness.

  7. Hi Nila. I'm back to a bit of blogging for the IWSG and soon the WEP. Excited.
Now you're someone who really takes notice of the 'small' things in life, but drinking coffee or other hot drinks is quite a past time of mine, but i don't often get a skin on it, LOL!

    Loved this image, clever you.

    1. Hmm...you've made me think now - is it the pace of drinking or the air there? :) Either way, lucky you!

I'm glad and excited to get back to WEP, it feels like ages since I've been there...

  8. I can't recall the last time a drink ended up with a skin on it. Inspired idea for a poem, though!

    1. In real life if you can't recall it then you're not doing badly at all :)

In the metaphors of cups and glasses a skin on the halfway cup is a piquant opportunity!
