Recognise

From the Marine Drive, Mumbai.

Some weeks are darker than others

some fortnight’s just shades of agony,

the distress of fathers and brothers

is hard to stand witness and see;

but every darkness gets over,

it's transient, temporary,

each minute it’s spinning closer -

some sort of lightfall. Clarity.

Not all light must be a sunrise,

all darkness doesn't cradle stars.

Sometimes the dark is a disguise,

for light’s got degrees and avatars -

lift up this face and recognise

light and darkness for what they are.

  1. Some weeks are indeed darker than others. Mired in some the possibility of light seems remote at best.
And yet we need them both... And both have their comfort and their pain.

  3. I needed this poem. Been a dark week - truly with power out Mon thru Wed. Then we had an attempted break-in Fri eve. Very scary at our house. Very ready for Feb to be over, maybe even get rid of 2021. I'm ready for brighter light, my friend. And I know I am lucky, fortunate, and so many folks are in despair. Wow.

    1. Oh Joanne. I'm so distressed for you. What a horrific experience! I know exactly what you mean by being ready to get rid of 2021, I am too, 21 is just so much 2020 redux in the most horrible way possible. Hugs.

  4. The darkness isn't permanent and that's the hope we need.

    1. The less permanent it is the better of we are!

  5. Hi Nila - such an appropriate poem for now ... we have to deal with both ... our imagination can release us, yet too hold us back in the darker side of life ... then perhaps we can remember the beauty and draw it out of the dark. Stay safe - and have a good week - Hilary
