Worm's eye view

Lomolomo. Juky 22.

The sun has almost touched the horizon

and I too want to stay close to the ground

to read the stories silken sands have spun,

where the ocean’s scattered seashells around

The tide is low and a tired old white kite

lies asleep, its tail like a mermaid’s fin

fluttering over the last of the daylight.

Their day’s work’s done, the boats are drawing in

My body is crumbed with glittery sand

and my hair is billowing with the tide

I’m neither of the water nor this land

and I’m neither the road nor still hillside.

Just want to stay close to the wash of blue -

never the bird, rather a worm’s eye view.

  1. I love to watch the sun set or rise over the water. As to eye view, I think I'd rather be a bird and soar over the water. I like the hair billowing like the waves.

  2. Thank you for sharing this beautiful time though, if I had my druthers, I would LOVE to fly over the ocean and the sand...

    1. Most people would, I guess. And that's achievable too in an airplane. Seeing things from a worm's or crab's eye view is less feasible and not as ubiquitous as flying.

Land/eyelevel travel is my favourite form, though I accept it is slower and not always possible in our fast paced modern world. It would probably take weeks and weeks to get from India to Fiji! :)

  3. Oh, this is lovely. I'm back to TX and I had the glory of some beach days on the east coast. You captured the mood perfectly.

And thanks for reading and commenting while I was gone. I just couldn't seem to make my phone work to comment on you. Technology eludes me.

    1. Glad to hear you had a good time at the East Coast! Family vacations are top priority, therefore glad also you didn't take time away to comment :)

And I too have never figured out the complicated business of getting to Blogger on the phone.

  4. Hi Nila - strange but true ... I heard about an Afghan kite-maker on the Beeb this morning ... so I'll be writing about him and his kites.

This is so evocative ... a delightful, mournful, soulful read - loved it - memories of those days of yore (for me ... my Cornwall days with my Ma) ... wandering the sands.

I think I'd rather 'go fly a kite' than be a worm ... I like to see - at least with a kite I'd be tethered mostly to the land.

Thank you ... I always love your poems - thought provoking. Cheers Hilary

    1. I like being tethered closely to the ground, as closely as possible. Cornwall beaches are beyond spectacular, I remember Sennen Cove on a summer's day, St Ives and Falmouth too. Glorious! I do love to be beside the seaside! :) Glad you enjoyed the poetry.
