In Memoriam

Ma. Possibly in Agra in the late 1960s.

A birthday is a hollow sock

when the person’s gone,

stockings empty of the present,

no chats on the phone.

A birthday is flowers and vase,

and some photographs,

a looping back and touching base

and cupcakes on behalf.

A birthday is a cloudy mood

the weight of milestones,

a mixed up bit of pensive glad

and darker undertones.

Although the day's a mooring too -

pinning the year in place,

a chance to dial the chaos down,

to renew and retrace.

A thumbing of old albums and

a rough-edged thankfulness

that we had what we had when they

lived at the same address.

The Love Song of an Un-Prufrock

II.

If I had, like a cat, nine lives – I believe

I’d let my mother’s china be with someone

who’d use it more. I’d eat off banana leaves,

drink more from clay cups in each one rather than

fine, foreign porcelain. I’d use the word foreign

itself a lot less because more things would be

mine to cherish without paying attention

to their provenance, craftsman’s nationality.

In those other lives, I’d smell more books and rain

buy fewer umbrellas and be less afraid,

just squeeze your hand tighter when the thunder came.

I’d look more closely at the dents raindrops make

on the sands. Also at your thumbprints on glass,

leave the smudges. Learn to photograph the grass.

Pleased to report that this whole series is now complete, all nine of them. And I got some others written in the idle-time between them too. A good crop, all in all.

The birthday always falls around the time my American friends and family celebrate Thanksgiving - and it's always seemed to me a good one to borrow into my own life. This year it feels extra special due to various reasons, not least among them the personal harvest situation going on - written and unwritten, countable and uncountable. Giving thanks for each one of them, every single day.

Happy Thanksgiving to you in advance if you're observing. And the happiest of weeks to you if you're not.

Daily celebration

I did not bring up love this month, because
it felt improper to mark the personal.
The inside jobs of lawmakers and laws,
burnt tyres, broken arches - a huge betrayal
took up all the space. Smoke and vitriol
fogged every screen, an ineffable loss
in the arcs of batons and gun barrels,
shattered glass, smashed promises strewn across

the city. But then you should not equate -
this glancing away, maybe a brief silence,
a preoccupation with the external –
none of these you should consider equal
to change, and certainly not indifference.
Love’s still something I daily celebrate.

Happy birthday, Baba.

And you might enjoy looking back at this as well.

Thinking of that old photograph

The photo’s on the same shelf, the two of us -
my hair thick and springy, my saree pleats mussed
by one dangling leg, much younger limbs draped
across the armrest,  lithe, lighter, well-shaped
body and spirit. My father on the chair,
wears his usual dignity and sparser hair.
Both of us unmindful, quite unaware
that it was the last time we’d get to share
a seat quite so closely, the last of times
when his chairs would feel so completely mine.
We use up things – arms, armrests, odd cushions
oblivious of the final occasions.
Someone clicks a photo by random chance,
it takes years to get its significance.

It's my father's 21st birthday today.  Wishing you happy, and tranquil times ahead, Baba.
