Daily celebration

I did not bring up love this month, because
it felt improper to mark the personal.
The inside jobs of lawmakers and laws,
burnt tyres, broken arches - a huge betrayal
took up all the space. Smoke and vitriol
fogged every screen, an ineffable loss
in the arcs of batons and gun barrels,
shattered glass, smashed promises strewn across

the city. But then you should not equate -
this glancing away, maybe a brief silence,
a preoccupation with the external –
none of these you should consider equal
to change, and certainly not indifference.
Love’s still something I daily celebrate.

Happy birthday, Baba.

And you might enjoy looking back at this as well.

  1. Sometimes the horrors abounding in the world, in our own community make it difficult to focus on love and relationships because the rest is so painful. Sometimes because of the chaos I have to focus closer in to save myself.

    1. True that focussing closer keeps us grounded and sane. The family is a fortress.

  2. Thank you - and I did enjoy your earlier post too. Muchly.
Love (in all its forms) should indeed be celebrated. Often. Enthusiastically.

  3. Hi Nila - we can't do without love ... yet the thought of horrors going on and the uncaring spirit of some humans beggars belief. As you say ... daily we can remember loves in its many forms ... particularly family. Take care - cheers Hilary

    1. No, we can't indeed. The events all round have been so full of hate and violence it's beyond horrific. The sooner people realise that hatred won't get them anywhere the better for everyone.

It is that Love which stretches to accommodate and absorb what is happening externally - and helps to protects us from its ravages. It is never diminished by the acknowledgement - and expants exponentially when focused where it belongs! YAM xx

    1. True. It doesn't diminish, becomes stiller and stronger.

  5. Yes, we can care and read and be caught up in the stuff we can't necessarily control. But we can also look closer, in our own backyard, and feel the love of family and friends - the community that is still kind and cares. And wish a Happy Birthday. Cheers!

    1. These days it's seriously dispiriting looking beyond backyards, so yeah, better to look closer and shut everything else out, only sometimes that strategy also is undoable.

  6. It's just unbelievable what's happening. Just when you think the world has learned, that 'we' have learned, you realize it was all just simmering in the darkness. And now we have politicians who've risen from that darkness to give power to the evil. It's horrifying!
I love that you, though are working hard to hold on to what's dear. We all are, and praying for the light to once more wipe out the dark!

    1. Evil is the right word. So tired of the nonstop hate and awfulness. Can't wait for the light to rise.

  7. Hopefully the light will drown out the darkness of our sad world under siege from dark forces, it appears. You've said it so so succinctly as always Nila.

    1. Hi Denise, I've had to turn it on after a total onslaught of spam a couple days ago. Hopefully, back to freedom of comment, and wider rights, shortly.
