Own lilt

I have come to a zithering rest
in your winter-cooled soothing arms
how mired I’ve been! how obsessed
with alien climates and subjects,
frantic fine tuning borderline calm.

Entire mythologies of summer heat,
of fire charred clouds of wilderness
have passed me by in discrete
small steps of many desert feet
through the blurry interface.

The march may have gone on through
scorching weeks and monsoons
but I just rushed, and stopped, and drew
breaths of breeze scents, looked for dew
on cactus thorns between high dunes.

Did you know that? and still sit still
and let me forget the hot sharp limb,
and offered me no counsel?
but perhaps that’s just as well
that I found my own lilt and hymn.

Shared at dVerse for the OLN where the post today is about writing poetry and inspiration for it.  Incidentally dVerse is where just the right mix of counsel and support is to be found for any creative writing, I learn such an amazing lot from each visit, and from the poetry pages that are linked there.  If you are in any way moved by writing or reading poetry, then it's a must visit.

  1. smiles....i think we all have to find our own hymn or music...its not easy and a journey...for me i really like the turn of the last couple stanzas the looking at the dew drop between the needles...

    1. It's the longest and hardest, the never ending journeys that turn out the most amazing sometimes! Thank you for the critique.

  2. Yes, I was going to comment on the same thing Brian did...love the idea of finding your own lilt and rhythm. I think we all have to find a way to somehow accomplish this in order to adapt to what IS in our life. Well penned all around.

    1. Yes, we all do, don't we? and I love the way each of us finds our own lilt, and it does manage to reflect our life's contents right there on the cover page. Thank you for being here and the feedback.

And I agree,it takes time to find our own lilt and hymn ~

And to find a supportive community and counsel like D'verse, is a real gem ~

    1. I was thinking of the contrasts in the language of the seasons as I wrote this - in the higher latitudes winter is something bitter and to be endured for the most part ("can spring be far behind?") whereas in the tropics it is the summer which is scorching and the killer season, winter's a welcome relief....and agree totally on pts 2 n 3, and thank you for 1 n 4.

    1. Thank you for reading, and yes, sad that not everyone can track it down.

  7. Your heated description is very precise, so much so that one can sense it, learn from it. Works so well as a metaphor - tested by heat, a crucible where you find your own voice, your own place. I like that lilt - it's your own!

    1. Our own places, our own lilts, accents whatever we choose to call it - are the easiest to like because we are the most expressive then I think, the pitch that really rocks. And that has to be found alone, no-one can really do it for anyone else. Thanks for clicking over, and the critique, much valued!

  8. I think I see some strength and resolve in this narrator. I don't know poetry though.

    1. I don't know too much poetry either, not a literature major...and all too often resolve and strength elude me when most needed..thanks for stopping by
