National Trust of Fiji is a statutory body dedicated to the conservation of Fijian public natural and historical resources. It lists nine sites/projects under its direct oversight and management. That includes a sanctuary for Fiji's native Iguana, the first Fijian national park at Sigatoka. Find out about the work the Trust does by clicking on the link here.
Fiji has a variety of terrains - rainforest, mountainous and flat, coastal plains. |
Nature Fiji - Mareqeti Viti is the only domestic NGO working towards the conservation of Fijian natural heritage. Read about the initiatives they are working on over here.
Fiji signed the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) alongside 190 countries at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro Summit in 1992. The first National Biodiversity and Strategy and Action Plan was developed in 2003. A revised Plan is now in place covering 2017-2024 devised by government. Read the National Plan for more details.
There are on-going challenges of course. Though Fiji's landmass has a forest cover of 50 % still there are threats of illegal logging and insufficient legislation for land and development management. Over fishing poses a threat as well in the marine and inshore habitats. Several hundred of native species are under threat and local skills as well as awareness needs supplementing. Fiji is also at the frontline in terms of climate change and faces urgent threats from unpredictable weather patterns and sea level rise.
Fiji is a nature lover's paradise. |
All this month I'll be writing about Aspects of Fiji, which is where I'm at the mo. And where the sum of its parts is naturally greater than the whole!
Did you know that there
is no capital punishment in Fiji? Fijian law abolished the noose totally in
2015 for all crimes. Before that it had done away with the death penalty for ordinary crimes in 1979. Read more about that here in this newspaper report.

ReplyDeleteWow - I hadn't realised that Fiji was so late in keeping capital punishment, actually! Good read about Nature... YAM xx
Fiji seems to be working on it. I don't know if I can say the same about us here in the USA. And of course capital punishment is still going on.
ReplyDeleteThat was quite a read of the last hanging.
I am firmly in favour of no capital punishment - and of heritage protection. Very, very firmly in favour.
ReplyDeleteNature - we have to save as much as possible. I'll be honest - I've been remiss in reading posts. Not on the computer much because this is THE primo time in TX to be outdoors. Not too hot, not too rainy, not too anything. Wildflowers are blooming and I know you appreciate that. So, your posts are awesome but I'm not staying up to date. Just know I appreciate you!!! Thanks
