Learning to...

 return...

I will go out, get away from these walls,

out where the mauve sky bends to gently croon

her soft secrets into the waterfalls,

into the creeks overseen by the moon.

I must get to the sky, draping her sunset

over her shoulder like a silken shawl

and trailing a few tassels in the inlets

while the fishing boats are drawing in their nets

and checking the silver of the day’s haul.

Don’t worry, I’ll come home with the tide, turn

and climb the path, the stars will have begun

to jostle for standing room, best position.

And looking at me the street will see someone

who’s gone out but has never learned to return.

  5. Indeed this is lovely. I always feel, when reading your poems, that I'm standing on a beach, a towel draped on my shoulders, and I'm enjoying the peace of waves over and over and over...truly - your words are calming, my friend. Thank you.

    1. Thank you for that vivid picture! Always a wonderful feeling to know the hows and whys of reader reaction. A great learning opportunity as well. I guess poetry is just my way of tuning out the panic :) So glad you find it calming, Joanne.

    1. A childhood practice was to come back when the streetlights came on. The stars came on at around the same time too :)

  8. Such a soft and silky poem, Nila. Love your imagery as always - ... the sky, draping her sunset/over her shoulder like a silken shawl...
