B is for Buddha

 is for Buddha

Buddha’s contribution

The wisdom of Buddha was widely revered
but his choice of wigs was certainly weird;
when this hairpiece was worn
he looked like an acorn
an acorn that was serene, and jug-eared.

But he was a prince and a gem, our Siddharth
He warmed the cockles of many a heart, and hearth.
Due to him, learned men
wrote on Ferraris and Zen,
and motorbike maintenance became an art.

B is for Buddha, who was an Indian prince, and left his family and kingdom to lead the life of an ascetic sometime Between the 4th and 6th century BCE. His teachings formed the basis of Buddhism, a belief system followed in many parts of the world today.  Loads of Busts and statues of him all over Asia, all with very typical heavy-long ears and that characteristic acorn hair-do.

And I have Been Brave this A-Z! Because not one word of this post has been unscheduled, spur of the moment.  I am getting there, slowly but surely, from haphazard pantser to smooth, cool planner.  The Brain is willing, but the Body is weak.  But it's coming along...erm, soon.

  7. I've heard Buddha would have been thin because he would have fasted a lot.

    1. Yes, he did and probably was thin. Maybe that's why the ears were that way. He also did not believe in personality cults, but when you've got an acorn hairpiece that's difficult to avoid :)

  8. Nilanjana, this is the first post I'm reading on B and I love it. You are so creative. Even I always wondered how Buddha got away with that hair do. Or maybe someone drew this really funny caricature of him one day and it stuck.. :p

  50. Nice! My B was for Buddha last year! I personally don't find Buddhism at all relevant as a "belief system" but rather an excellent source of consolidation for grounded principles. And I think it's fairly obvious that lesser men have since perverted some of his offerings. I doubt the real Buddha preached any self-contradictions or suggested that anyone "believed" instead of thinking for themselves. Not sure if you were partly an inspiration but I have finally started writing poetry again! Cheers!
